Nymans Garden

The English Spring is a wonderful time of year, when woodland can be found carpeted in our native bluebell. In recent years the time when the flowers bloom has been getting earlier in the season as a consequence of climate change, itself a mixed blessing. Nymans House & Gardens in West Sussex, owned by the National Trust, is an fine example of an English garden surrounding a picturesque house. Like many English country houses, which were usually surrounded by an estate providing food and income for the property owners as well as parkland & gardens for the enjoyment of the owners & their guests, Nymans has woodland which at this time of year resembles an emerald landscape encrusted with sapphire like bluebells, primulas resembling wildly scattered citrines and areas of white wood anemones which from a distance look as if a fine piece of Belgian lace has been left on the woodland floor. Nymans also has its formal gardens and its rock gardens provide richly coloured spaces in which to enjoy the warmer weather. One can imagine sitting on a blankets in these small, intimate spaces, having a picnic or simply lying beneath the Spring sunshine, eyes closed, relishing the early warmth.
